Concert Band

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is one of three concert ensembles for students registered for Advanced Band.  The ensemble consists of freshman through seniors.  The ensemble gives three to four concerts per year and travels to the North Carolina Central District Band Festival each spring.  They received a superior rating in the spring of 2004 at the NCCDB Festival.

Wind Ensemble

Almost 90% of this ensemble's members are in the Viking Marching Band. The same percentage of students in this ensemble are also involved in or have been involved in private lessons with an area professional. The Wind Ensemble at Northwest performs music from the Grade VI category at NC Central District Festival. They have consistently received superior ratings at the NCCDB Festival.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble is an elite group of 20-22 musicians who audition to become members of the music department's finest ensembles.  This audition is open to any interested music student and take place during the first two weeks of school.  The ensemble performs locally and across the state at various festivals, conventions and community events. They consistently perform well at festivals, earning superiors in and out of the States as well as Canada. Also at these same festivals they have been awarded numerous outstanding soloist awards. In 1994 they performed at the NC Music Educators In-Service Conference.

Marching Band/Color Guard

The competitive Northwest Guilford Viking Marching Band was created in 1975 with 32 students attending Northwest Junior and Senior High Schools. The Viking Marching Band begins practice in the summer, playing at home football games, local and regional competitions and holiday parades. This group consists entirely of volunteers who enjoy the excitement of music and marching together, and the thrill of putting it on the line during games and competitions. They rehearse outside of the school days two or three afternoons per week. On various Saturdays they travel in and out of state to competitions, in which they are very successful, receiving numerous awards and ratings.

Winterguard

Winterguard is an ensemble of young men and women who compete in the CWEA circuit. Typically there are two ensembles. These ensembles perform at 3 or 4 competitions during the months of January, February and March throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Winter Drumline

Winter Drumline is a competitive percussion ensemble of young men and women. This ensemble performs 3 or 4 competitions during the months of January, February and March thorughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
